NGT Chairperson will preside over the event and Senior Dignitaries from MOEF&CC, CPCB, State Boards and state holder departments of Northern States shall be participating.
Chandigarh (11th December) : The Directorate of Environment and climate change, Govt. of Punjab is organising a one day Regional Conference on 14th December at Chandigarh under the theme “No Time Left, Act Now”. The senior dignitaries from Ministry of Environment, Forests and climate change, Govt. of India, Central Pollution Control Board, State Pollution Control Boards and State holder departments of Northern state shall be participating in this conference.
Discussing about the details of this regional conference Sh. R.K. Verma, Principal Secretary to Govt. of Punjab, Deptt. of Science, Technology and Environment said that this conference under the Theme “No Time Left, Act Now” shall have four sessions covering the key thematic areas like waste management, water quality management, domestic sewage management, industrial waste water management and air quality monitoring.
Mr. Verma said that the plenary session under the head “Healthy Environment for Healthy People” shall be presided over by Justice Adarsh K. Goyal, Chairperson, National Green Tribunal New delhi. Justice Jasbir Singh (Retd,), Chairman Monitoring committee constituted by NGT, Sh. Karan Avtar Singh, Chief Secretary, GOP, Smt. Nidhi Khare, Joint Secretary MOFE & CC., Sh. S.P. Singh Parihar, Chairman CPCB., Prof. S.S. Marwaha Chairman PPCB., Chief Secretaries & Secretaries of the neighbouring states shall be the other dignitaries of this session. He elaborated that session will include, major regional environmental challenges and role of various stake holders for the protection of environment, contribution of healthy environment in the economic prosperity of the State, analysing the reasons of deterioration of the environment despite best efforts by the judiciary, Govt. & Non Govt. organizations, efforts made by the State Govt. through Mission Tandrust Punjab and role of Judiciary, Govt. & Non Govt. organizations for environment protection & management.
He further said that second session ‘State Action Plans-The Journey so Far” shall be presided over by Justice Pritam Pal Chairman, NGT monitoring Committee where the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh will share the achievements of their action plans challenges faced, lessons learnt and the improvement envisaged to make them more effective and how to bring greater accountability in the execution of the action plans.
Elaborating further, Mr. Verma said the third session on Best Practices for Environment protection and Management shall be chaired by Mr. Subodh Aggarwal, Former Chief Secretary Punjab and Presently member NGT State Monitoring Committee. The session will share such best practices in the field of air pollution, Waste water management, waste to wealth, green economy and other aspects of environment protection and Management. It will also discuss the effective communication strategy for garnering massive public support for implementation of various initiatives.
Sh. Verma deliberating further regarding this conference said that without the involvement of various research organisations, eminent universities, prominent scientists and researchers, the multi-faced and multi-dimensional problem of environmental pollution cannot be tackled scientifically, for which fourth session “Role of Research, Innovation and Technology in facing Environmental Challenges” has been planned which will deliberate the role of universities and research institutions in supporting the efforts of the state in combating the environmental pollution. The session will also look at introducing innovative techniques in environment management and how some of the start-ups are providing innovative solutions for environment protection and management. This session will provide an opportunity to learn from others and focus on creating research networks for strengthening knowledge base for driving tech based novel solutions for environment Management.
